Gratitude, Awareness, & the Beauty of Simplicity
Quote:
“If you can just appreciate each thing, one by one, then you will have pure gratitude. Even though you observe just one flower, that one flower includes everything.”
– Suzuki Roshi
Reflection:
Gratitude is often thought of as something grand—being thankful for major life events, accomplishments, or big moments. But true gratitude is found in the smallest details. When we fully appreciate one thing—a single flower, a sip of tea, the warmth of the sun—we are, in that moment, connected to everything.
Life is composed of these small, fleeting moments. Each one holds infinite depth if we take the time to truly see it. A flower is not just a flower; it carries within it the sun, the rain, the earth, and the countless conditions that allowed it to bloom. Similarly, when we appreciate just one thing deeply, we begin to see the interconnectedness of all things.
Action:
Pause for a moment and choose one simple thing around you—a leaf, a cup of tea, the sound of the wind. Observe it fully. Notice its colors, textures, movements, or sounds. Let yourself feel gratitude for it, not just as an isolated object but as something connected to the whole.
Carry this awareness with you. Gratitude grows when you slow down and truly see what is before you.
